My last 4 years sitting on council as Harvey Ward Councillor has been very rewarding! I have enjoyed every moment of learning the ropes, so to speak. It was beneficial having had three returning council members to orient myself with processes and protocols.
During my 2022 campaign for council I promised to be accessible to my constituents, a promise I carried through on during my term and will continue to commit to in the new term of council as your Deputy Mayor.
I have had the honour and pleasure of sitting on several boards and committees which include the:
Trent Lakes Staff
I often marvel at the amount of work our staff do to keep our municipality functioning as well as it does. They do the lion's share of the work and are an endless source of support for council. There is no rest period between council meetings, as soon as one council meeting ends they are hard at work building the agenda for the next meeting among other responsibilities. We are very lucky to have the caliber of staff that we do and this should be appreciated and nurtured.
The Heart and Soul of Our Community- Our Volunteers
I honestly believe that if we did not have our community volunteers, we would not be in the good position we are today. All of our municipal community centres in Galway, Cavendish, Lakehurst as well as the privately owned Buckhorn Community Centre, and their boards are staffed with volunteers. Our skating rinks in Cavendish and Buckhorn are operated and maintained by volunteers. Our Lake and Community Associations provide community support which includes environmental initiatives. When we lose volunteers, we potentially lose community programming and community engagement. This void would have to be filled by hiring more municipal staff of which its costs would be passed on to us, the tax payers.
Why do I believe I would be effective in the role of Deputy Mayor?
Since joining council in 2022 I have strived to fulfil my responsibilities as Harvey Ward Councillor with passion, competence and common sense. I believe my policing experience having held roles in management and now my 4 years on council and various committees outside of the municipality has positioned me to take the next step in representing our municipality. We are one of 444 municipalities in Ontario and need strong representation on Peterborough County Council when dealing with municipal, county and provincial matters.
We need to have strong representation on county council to ensure that the province is held to account and is providing our municipality with fair and equitable financial support. I would like to thank our current Deputy Mayor, Carol Armstrong and Mayor, Terry Lambshead for their leadership representing our municipality on county council during this term.
I will bring a methodical and measured approach to the Deputy Mayor's position knowing when to sit and assess and when to push.
I believe my personality sets me in good stead. I believe any issue or situation I face, I give it the due attention required to make a sound and balanced decision. It may not be popular at times but it certainly was not reached haphazardly.
I specifically enjoy interacting with my community, whether it be a function at one of our municipal halls, the fun and delicious dinners at Galway Hall, the roast beef dinners at Lakehurst Hall, the snacks and euchre days at Cavendish Hall, the Oak Shores Community Centre breakfasts or the many functions at the Buckhorn Community Centre or attending monthly seniors group meetings and luncheons. I feel a close connection to my community throughout our municipality.
